New Permanent Residency streams in may 2021

The government of Canada announced in April 2021 that it would be launching six new immigration streams in May this year.

Via its Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s new pathways, there would be new means for French speakers, essential workers and international graduates to migrate to Canada. The streams set up two pathways for workers in Canada (health care and other essential workers), English-speaking international graduates, French speaking workers in Canada (health care and other essential workers) and French-speaking international graduates.

In total, these streams will be allowing close to 100,000 new immigrants to receive permanent residency status and allow the government to attempt to reach its target for 2021 despite international borders remaining closed due to the pandemic.

The target numbers set are the maximum number of persons that the government has stated it will accept for each pathway that will be launching by 06th May, 2021. See the table below for a breakdown of all the information on each pathway application:

Type of worker Max number of applications Eligibility Criteria
Workers in Canada Healthcare workers 20,000 1 year full-time work experience within the last three years
Workers in Canada Other essential workers 30,000 1 year full-time work experience within the last three years
International Graduates English-speaking 40,000 Graduated after January 2017 from a Designated Learning Institution
International Graduates French-speaking No limit set Graduated after January 2017 from a Quebec CEGEP
Workers in Canada French-speaking healthcare workers No limit set 1 year full-time work experience within the last three years and French language benchmark of NCLC 4
Workers in Canada French-speaking other essential workers No limit set 1 year full-time work experience within the last three years and French language benchmark of NCLC 4

It should be noted that full-time work experience can also be substituted for part-time total work of 1560 hours. There are also more general requirements across the board including being currently employed with a Canadian employer and having the qualifying language test results (Canadian Language Benchmark of 4 in English or French) for workers to obtain PR status.

International graduates should be graduated or intend to graduate in 2021 and not before 2017 while receiving a qualifying credential from a Designated Learning Institution in Canada or Quebec CEGEP to obtain PR status.

Graduates have a stricter criteria to fulfil as they must also be employed with a Canadian employer and possess a study or work permit along with meeting the Canadian Language Benchmark of 5 in English or French. All eligibility criteria seem to be the same for both English and French speakers and more information can be found on the IRCC’s website.
